Can I use a 12V battery to power a 9V radio or radio/cassette?
I’ve been travelling around Africa recently and have seen people using 12V batteries (sometimes automotive batteries and other times alarm-system SLA batteries) to power 9V DC radios. Are these devices typically designed to handle voltages significantly higher than their rated voltage, bearing in mind that a car battery voltage could be as high as 14 volts? From what I’ve seen, the African users of these radios don’t have a problem. Why not?
a radio that uses an internal 9 volt battery may be also designed to accept 12 volts on its external power connector. in which case it probably has a regulator on that input. depends on the design, but i suspect that the external volts input for these radios is 12 volts.
